A group of conditions associated with the elevation or lowering of a person’s mood, such as depression or bipolar disorder

Chronic Fatigue

A disease characterised by profound fatigue, sleep abnormalities, pain and other symptoms that are made worse by exertion.

Chronic fatigue syndrome occurs more commonly in women. The cause of this condition is unknown, but may include environmental or genetic factors.

The main symptom is fatigue for over six months. The fatigue often worsens with activity, but doesn’t improve with rest.

There is no cure or approved treatment for this condition. However, some symptoms can be treated or managed to provide relief.

Anxiety

A mental health disorder characterised by feelings of worry, anxiety or fear that are strong enough to interfere with one’s daily activities.

Examples of anxiety disorders include panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Symptoms include stress that’s out of proportion to the impact of the event, inability to set aside a worry and restlessness.

Treatment includes counselling or medication, including antidepressants.

Insomnia

Persistent problems falling and staying asleep.

Most cases of insomnia are related to poor sleeping habits, depression, anxiety, lack of exercise, chronic illness or certain medication.

Symptoms may include difficulty falling or staying asleep and not feeling well-rested.

Treatment for insomnia consists of improving sleep habits, behaviour therapy and identifying and treating underlying causes. Sleeping pills may also be used, but should be monitored for side effects.

Panic Attacks

Sudden episode of intense fear or anxiety and physical symptoms, based on a perceived threat rather than imminent danger.

Alternative/ Complimentary Medicine

Complementary and alternative medicine includes practices such as massage, acupuncture, tai chi, and drinking green tea. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is the term for medical products and practices that are not part of standard medical care.
